Antique Victorian Scottish Mahogany Pole Fire Screen / Fireplace Face Shield. Circa: 1920 - 1860. Handmade needlepoint floral decoration on screen. Fireplace pole screens were used in upper class homes to shield a woman's face from the heat of the fire. Makeup of the day was wax based. Too much heat would cause it to melt and look unsightly.
