Turkeys: Blue Slate. 1 Tom/ male. 2 hens / females
All adults,
The blue slate turkey is a rare, heritage turkey. Turkeys were first domesticated in Mexico over 2000 years ago, and the blue slate turkey was first mentioned in literature in the 1800s. In 1874, they were recognized as a standard breed by the American Poultry Association. Its exact origin is unknown, although theories around how it came to be persist, per Oklahoma State University.
Even though these colorful birds have been around quite awhile, they are considered to be quite rare. In fact, these heritage turkeys are on the watch list of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, meaning they are globally endangered.
